# Blog Categories

Blogs act as categories to organize your blog posts by topic.

---

## Overview

Blogs are simple containers for organizing your articles:

- Each article belongs to one blog
- Blogs are created inline when adding articles
- A default "News" blog is created automatically
- A blog has only two fields: a title and a URL handle

---

## Creating a Blog

Blogs are created directly from the article editor — there is no separate blog management screen:

1. Navigate to **Content > Blog posts**
2. Click **Add blog post**
3. In the **Blog** dropdown, type a new blog name (at least 2 characters)
4. Click **Create "your blog name"**
5. The new blog is created and selected for this article

If the name you type produces a handle that already exists in your store, that existing blog is selected instead of creating a duplicate.

Because blogs are created from the article editor, a blog's title and handle are fixed once created. To change either, create a new blog and move the articles by re-selecting the blog on each one.

---

## Blog Details

### Title

The display name of your blog shown to customers.

**Examples:**
- "News & Updates"
- "Product Guides"
- "Industry Insights"

### Handle

The URL-friendly name used in your blog's web address.

- Automatically generated from the title
- Must be unique within your store
- Uses lowercase letters, numbers, and hyphens

**Example:** A title "News & Updates" becomes handle `news-updates`

Your blog URL will be: `yourstore.com/blogs/news-updates`

---

## Default Blog

When you create your first article without any blogs:

- A "News" blog is automatically created
- This blog is pre-selected for your article
- You can create additional blogs as needed

---

## Blog Visibility

New blogs are active as soon as they are created, and every active blog is listed at `/blogs`. The blog page at `/blogs/{handle}` shows that blog's published articles, newest first, 12 per page.

Draft and scheduled articles never appear in the listing, so a brand-new blog with nothing published yet renders as an empty blog page rather than a 404.

---

## SEO Information

Blogs have no SEO fields of their own — the blog listing page's tags are generated for you:

| Tag | Generated value |
|-----|-----------------|
| **Page title** | `{Blog title} - {Store name}` |
| **Meta description** | `Browse articles in {Blog title} at {Store name}` |
| **Social image** | The featured image of the newest article in the blog, if it has one |

Individual articles *do* have editable meta title and meta description fields — see [Managing Articles](/blogs/articles).

---

## Best Practices

- **Choose clear titles** - Use descriptive names that tell customers what content to expect
- **Keep handles short** - Shorter URLs are easier to share and remember
- **Plan your structure** - Consider creating separate blogs for different content types (news, guides, announcements)
- **Start simple** - Begin with one or two blogs and add more as your content grows
