# Credit card surcharge

Stores can add a **credit card surcharge** on a card gateway under **Settings → Payments**. The rate is one percentage, at most 3%, and it applies to credit cards only. Debit, prepaid, and unrecognized cards are not surcharged, and Sezzle and Credova never are. Billing addresses in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, and Puerto Rico, where state law bans surcharges, are never surcharged either.

Fortis accounts do not take a rate typed into FirearmCart. Save the gateway or click **Test connection** and FirearmCart copies the surcharge Fortis has configured. The fee is shown on checkout and on receipts, it is not taxed, and refunds return a proportional share of it.
