# Product Reviews

Add customer reviews to your products to build trust and increase conversions.

## Features

## Prerequisites

Before setting up, you need:

- Product Reviews plugin activated from **Plugins > Marketplace**

## Setting Up

1. Navigate to **Plugins > Marketplace**
2. Find **Product Reviews**
3. Click **Activate**
4. Navigate to **Plugins > Product Reviews**
5. Configure your review settings (see below)

## Settings

| Setting | Description |
|---------|-------------|
| **Auto-approve new reviews** | Automatically approve new reviews without manual moderation. Off by default. |
| **Require email on import** | Reject CSV rows that don't have an email address. Off by default. This applies to imports only, not storefront submissions. |
| **Show unverified reviews** | Display reviews that are not linked to a verified purchase. On by default. |
| **Min Rating to Display** | Only show reviews at or above this star rating. Defaults to 1 (show all). |
| **Who can submit reviews** | **Anyone (guest OK)**, logged-in customers only, or **Only customers who purchased**. The logged-in option requires Customer Accounts to be enabled in **Settings > General**. |

## Managing Reviews

### Viewing Reviews

1. Navigate to **Plugins > Product Reviews**
2. Browse all reviews with filtering and sorting
3. Filter by status (pending, approved, declined)
4. Search by reviewer first or last name, email, product SKU, or review title

### Adding a Review

1. Click **Add Review**
2. Fill in reviewer details (first name, last name, email)
3. Enter the product SKU
4. Enter title, body, and star rating (1-5)
5. Set status (pending, approved, or declined)
6. Optionally set a **Review Date** and mark it as a **Verified Purchase**
7. Save the review

### Bulk Actions

Select multiple reviews and apply actions:

- **Approve** — Publish selected reviews
- **Decline** — Hide selected reviews
- **Mark Pending** — Move back to moderation queue
- **Delete** — Permanently remove selected reviews

## CSV Import

Import reviews in bulk using a CSV file.

### Import Process

1. Click **Import Reviews**
2. Click **Download Template** for the correct format
3. Upload your completed CSV file
4. Reviews are processed automatically

> **Tip:** For files with more than 50 rows, the import runs in the background and you'll receive an email when it completes.

### CSV Format

The CSV template includes columns for:

| Column | Description |
|--------|-------------|
| **first_name** | Reviewer's first name (required) |
| **last_name** | Reviewer's last name (required) |
| **email** | Reviewer's email address |
| **product_sku** | SKU of the reviewed product |
| **title** | Review title |
| **body** | Review body text (required) |
| **rating** | Star rating 1-5 (required) |
| **reviewed_at** | Date the review was written |

Imported rows are marked as a verified purchase when the email matches an existing customer.

## Theme Integration

Product Reviews integrates with the theme builder through custom Liquid sections and variables.

### Liquid Variables

Two custom Liquid variables are available on product pages:

- `{{ product.rating }}` — Outputs inline SVG star rating
- `{{ product.rating_full }}` — Outputs stars plus a text summary (e.g., "4.2 (37 reviews)")

Both return an empty string if no reviews exist for the product.

### Custom Sections

The plugin adds five sections to the visual editor's section picker once it's active:

| Section | Best for |
|---------|----------|
| **Product Reviews** | The standard review list on a product page |
| **Reviews Carousel** | A horizontal slider of reviews |
| **Reviews Grid** | An even grid of review cards |
| **Reviews Masonry** | A staggered, Pinterest-style wall of reviews |
| **Product Review Form** | Let customers submit a review from the storefront |

## Public API

The Product Reviews plugin exposes a public JSON API on your storefront domain for fetching reviews.

### Endpoint

```
GET /api/reviews?sku={product_sku}
```

### Parameters

| Parameter | Description |
|-----------|-------------|
| **sku** | Product SKU to fetch reviews for |
| **page** | Page number |
| **per_page** | Reviews per page (capped at 50) |
| **display_style** | `by_sku` (default), `random`, or `all` |

### Response

The response contains `reviews` (id, first name, last-name initial, title, body, rating, verified-purchase flag and date), a `summary` with average rating, total count and rating distribution, and `pagination`.

There is also a rate-limited `POST /api/reviews` endpoint that the Product Review Form section uses to submit reviews.

## Troubleshooting

### Reviews Not Displaying

**Symptoms:** Reviews are approved but not showing on the storefront

**Solutions:**
- Verify the plugin is activated
- Check that reviews are in **Approved** status
- Ensure the **Min Rating to Display** threshold isn't filtering them out
- If the reviews have no linked purchase, confirm **Show unverified reviews** is on
- Confirm your theme includes a review section or the rating Liquid variables

### CSV Import Failing

**Symptoms:** Import errors or reviews not appearing after import

**Solutions:**
- Download and use the provided CSV template
- Ensure `first_name`, `last_name`, `body` and `rating` are present on every row — they are required
- Ensure product SKUs match existing products
- Check that ratings are between 1 and 5
- Include an email on every row if **Require email on import** is enabled
