# Shipping Insurance

Offer shipping insurance to protect orders during transit with flexible pricing options.
---

## Features

| Feature | Description |
|---------|-------------|
| **Flexible pricing** | Flat rate, percentage-based, or tiered pricing |
| **Product type scoping** | Apply to all products or specific product types |
| **On by default** | Insurance is added to every qualifying order; choose whether customers can take it off at checkout |
| **Custom label** | Set a custom name for the insurance line on the order summary |
| **Tooltip text** | Add explanatory text for customers |

> Insurance is offered and displayed at **checkout**. It does not appear on the cart page.

---

## Prerequisites

Before setting up, you need:

- Shipping Insurance plugin activated from **Plugins > Marketplace**

---

## Setting Up

1. Navigate to **Plugins > Marketplace**
2. Find **Shipping Insurance**
3. Click **Activate**
4. Navigate to **Plugins > Shipping Insurance**
5. Configure your insurance settings (see below)
6. Click **Save Settings**
---

## General Settings

| Setting | Description |
|---------|-------------|
| **Display Label** | Name shown on the checkout summary line (e.g., "Shipping Protection") |
| **Require shipping insurance on all orders** | Insurance is added to every qualifying order either way. When this is on, customers can't remove it at checkout; when it's off, they can take it off with the x next to the line. |

---

## Pricing Methods

Choose one of three pricing methods for calculating insurance costs. One must be selected before settings can be saved.

### Flat Rate

A fixed dollar amount added to every order.

| Setting | Description |
|---------|-------------|
| **Flat Rate Amount** | Fixed insurance cost (e.g., $4.99) |

### Percentage

A percentage of the cart subtotal — before shipping and tax.

| Setting | Description |
|---------|-------------|
| **Percentage of Subtotal** | Percentage of cart value (e.g., 2%) |

### Tiered Pricing

Different rates based on cart value ranges. This allows you to charge more for higher-value orders.

| Setting | Description |
|---------|-------------|
| **Min Cart Total** | Minimum cart value for the tier |
| **Max Cart Total** | Maximum cart value for the tier |
| **Insurance Rate** | Insurance cost for orders in this range |

Bounds are inclusive, and the first matching tier wins. A cart that falls outside every tier gets **no insurance charge at all** — including when insurance is set to required — so make your top tier's maximum high enough to cover your largest realistic order.

> **Tip:** Create multiple tiers to cover all cart value ranges. For example: $0-$100 = $2.99, $100.01-$500 = $5.99, $500.01-$100,000 = $9.99.

---

## Product Types

Control which carts trigger the insurance option:

| Option | Description |
|--------|-------------|
| **All product types** | Insurance available for all orders |
| **Select product types** | Only offer insurance when the cart contains at least one item of a selected type |

---

## Tooltip

| Setting | Description |
|---------|-------------|
| **Show tooltip icon on checkout** | Adds an info icon next to the insurance line |
| **Tooltip Text** | Help text explaining what the insurance covers (up to 500 characters) |

---

## How It Works

1. Customer adds items to their cart and proceeds to checkout
2. If the cart qualifies (based on product type scoping), insurance is added to the order summary automatically
3. Unless insurance is required, the customer can remove it with the x next to the line. The removal applies to the checkout they're on — reloading checkout or coming back from the cart adds it again, which is how a customer who removed it by mistake gets it back
4. Insurance amount is calculated from the cart subtotal using the configured pricing method
5. The insurance fee is added to the order total and stored on the order

---

## Troubleshooting

### Insurance Not Showing

**Symptoms:** Insurance option doesn't appear at checkout

**Solutions:**
- Verify the plugin is activated
- Ensure a pricing method is configured and saved
- If using **Select product types**, confirm the cart contains qualifying products
- The customer may have removed it on the page they're looking at; reloading checkout adds it back (required insurance can't be removed at all)
- Remember insurance is checkout-only — it will never appear on the cart page

### Incorrect Insurance Amount

**Symptoms:** Insurance amount doesn't match expectations

**Solutions:**
- Review your pricing method configuration
- For tiered pricing, check that your tiers cover the cart's value range — a cart above the highest maximum is charged $0
- For percentage pricing, verify the percentage value and remember it applies to the subtotal, not the order total
