# Checkout Settings

Configure how your checkout works, including branding, validation, fraud protection, and NFA handling.

---

## Accessing Checkout Settings

1. Go to **Settings > Checkout**
2. Update your preferences
3. Click **Save Settings**

---

## Checkout Logo

Checkout always renders on a light background. If your store logo was designed for a dark header, upload a light-background version here so it stays readable at checkout.

- Formats: PNG, JPG, GIF
- Max file size: 1 MB

If you don't upload one, checkout falls back to your store logo.

---

## Checkout Options

### Require valid phone number

When enabled, customers must enter a valid phone number at checkout.

- Useful for delivery coordination
- Required for adult signature deliveries
- Helps with order issues

Enabled by default.

### Require valid email address

When enabled, the system verifies the customer's email address is valid and formatted correctly. Enabled by default.

### Enable address autocomplete

Suggests and completes the customer's address as they type. Enabled by default.

### Show marketing consent checkbox

Adds an unchecked email-marketing opt-in to checkout. Off by default. When enabled, you can set the **Marketing consent label** shown next to the checkbox (up to 120 characters). The default label is "Email me with news and offers".

---

## Fraud Protection

These checks run against the card's issuing bank data and reject the payment before any charge is attempted. All three are off by default.

### Only accept US-issued credit cards

Declines cards issued outside the US. Cards whose issuing country can't be determined are still allowed.

### Block prepaid cards

Declines prepaid and gift cards, a common instrument for card-testing and untraceable fraud.

### Show generic decline message

When on, a failed payment shows shoppers one generic message instead of the exact reason — denying card-testers the per-attempt feedback they use to find live cards. When off, shoppers see the precise reason (expired card, insufficient funds, and so on). The full reason is recorded on the order either way.

## NFA Orders

### Show the Class III/SOT Dealer badge

Controls when the "Class III/SOT Dealer" badge appears on SOT-holding dealers in the FFL picker:

| Option | Behavior |
|--------|----------|
| **When an NFA item is in the cart** | Default. Highlights SOT-holding dealers only when the order contains an NFA item |
| **Always** | Always highlights SOT-holding dealers in the FFL picker |
| **Never** | Never shows the badge |

### When an NFA item ships to a non-SOT dealer

| Option | Behavior |
|--------|----------|
| **Allow, but notify** | Default. Lets the order through, sends a notification, and flags it on the order's FFL card to confirm SOT with the dealer |
| **Require an SOT dealer at checkout** | Blocks checkout unless the selected FFL is a Class III/SOT dealer when the cart contains an NFA item |
| **Do nothing** | No checks beyond the badge above |

> **Note:** SOT (Class 3) status is not published by the ATF, so there is no authoritative public list. Ours is best-effort and does not include every SOT-holding dealer. If a dealer is missing its SOT flag, contact support to have it added.

---

## Order Confirmation Message

Shown at the top of the order confirmation — both the confirmation displayed right after checkout and the confirmation page linked from order emails. It appears on every order, so it suits FFL instructions, shipping delays, or holiday notices.

- Basic HTML is allowed (links, bold, lists); scripts are stripped automatically
- Up to 5,000 characters
- Leave blank to show nothing

---

## Checkout Footer Menu

Select which navigation menu appears in the checkout footer.

This allows you to show important links during checkout, such as:
- Return policy
- Shipping information
- Contact page

If you haven't created a navigation menu yet, the setting links you to the navigation editor.

---

## How Checkout Works

### Standard Orders

1. Customer adds items to cart
2. Enters contact information
3. Enters delivery address
4. Selects shipping method
5. Enters payment information
6. Completes order

If the store's card gateway has a credit card surcharge, the order summary adds that line before the customer pays, and a short disclosure appears under the card fields. Debit and prepaid cards drop the line, and so do billing addresses in states that ban surcharges. Sezzle and Credova are never surcharged. See [Payment Providers](/store-setup/payments#credit-card-surcharging).

### Firearm Orders

When the cart contains items that require a transfer:

1. Customer adds items to cart
2. Enters contact information
3. Enters delivery address
4. **Selects an FFL** in the FFL Transfer step (dealers are searched near the delivery ZIP)
5. Selects shipping method
6. Enters payment information
7. Completes order
8. Firearm ships to selected FFL for transfer
