Shipping

Set up shipping zones and rates to control how much customers pay for shipping based on their location and order.

How Shipping Works

1. You create shipping zones (groups of states)
2. Each zone has shipping rates (costs for shipping to that zone)
3. At checkout, customers see rates based on their location

Real-time rates take priority. If you have a live-rate carrier plugin active with real-time rates turned on (UPS, Stamps.com, or ShipStation), checkout quotes that carrier instead. Your manual zone rates are used only when no real-time rates come back. The Shipping Zones page shows a “Real-time rates active” banner when this applies.

Viewing Your Zones

Go to Settings > Shipping to see all your shipping zones.

Each zone shows:

• Zone name
• Whether it’s enabled
• States included

Creating a Zone

1. Go to Settings > Shipping
2. Click Add Zone
3. Enter a Zone Name (e.g., “West Coast”)
4. Click Create Zone

You’re taken straight into the new zone so you can add states and rates.

Editing a Zone

1. Click on a zone to open it
2. Select the states it covers and click Save States
3. Add or remove shipping rates

A zone must have at least one state. Shipping zones cover the 50 US states; Washington DC and the US territories are not selectable here (tax zones do include them).

Enabling/Disabling a Zone

You can enable or disable zones without deleting them:

• Enabled - The zone’s rates are offered to customers in these states
• Disabled - The zone is skipped entirely; if no other enabled zone covers the state, the customer sees no shipping options

Deleting a Zone

1. Click the three dots (…)
2. Click Delete
3. Confirm deletion

Warning: Deleting a zone also deletes all its shipping rates.

Each zone can have multiple shipping rates that customers choose from at checkout.

Open a shipping zone to see its rates.

Creating a Rate

1. Open a shipping zone
2. Click Add Rate
3. Enter rate details:
   • Rate Name - What customers see (e.g., “Standard Ground”)
   • Description (Optional) - Extra detail such as “3-5 business days”
   • Condition Type - Based on Order Total, Based on Weight, or Based on Product Type
   • Price and the min/max range for the condition (order-total and weight rates only)
4. Click Save

Rate Conditions

Every rate has a condition type. It defaults to Based on Order Total.

Based on Order Total

Rate applies based on the cart subtotal, using a Minimum Order Total ($) and Maximum Order Total ($):

Based on Weight

Rate applies based on order weight (each product’s weight multiplied by its quantity), using a Minimum Weight (lbs) and Maximum Weight (lbs):

Ranges can’t overlap. Within a zone, rates that share a condition type must cover distinct ranges, and the first range you create must start at 0. Saving an overlapping range is rejected with a validation error.

Based on Product Type

Rate is calculated by combining costs for each product category in the cart. This is ideal for stores selling firearms and related products with different shipping requirements.

How it works:

When you create a product type rate, you set a price for each of the four categories (all four are required; enter 0 for any you don’t want to charge for). At checkout, the shipping cost is the sum of the rates for each category present in the cart. A category is counted once no matter how many items of that type are in the cart.

Product type rates don’t use min/max ranges — they always apply.

Example:

If a customer orders a handgun ($20) and ammunition ($15), their shipping cost would be $35.00.

Tip: Products are automatically categorized based on their product type. Any unmapped product types default to the Accessories category.

Setting Up Free Shipping

To offer free shipping over a certain amount:

1. Create a paid rate covering $0 up to just under your threshold (e.g. “Standard Ground”, $8.99, minimum $0, maximum $149.99)
2. Create a second rate with price $0, condition Based on Order Total, minimum $150 and no maximum
3. Name it “Free Shipping (Orders over $150)”

Both rates are needed because the first order-total range in a zone must start at 0 and the ranges can’t overlap.

Zone with Product Type Pricing

With this setup:

• A handgun order ships for $20
• A rifle + ammo order ships for $40 ($25 + $15)
• An accessories-only order ships for $10

Tips

Zone Strategy

• Start simple - Create one zone for all states, add more later
• Group by cost - States with similar shipping costs in one zone
• Separate restricted states - Create zones for states with restrictions

Rate Strategy

• Offer free shipping threshold - Encourages larger orders
• Keep it simple - Too many options can confuse customers
• Cover your costs - Make sure rates cover actual shipping costs

Firearms and Ammunition

Manual zone rates are a flat price — they don’t know what’s in the cart (apart from product type rates). The carrier-level restrictions below apply when you use a real-time rate provider such as UPS or Stamps.com:

• Handguns - UPS requires an air service (Next Day Air, Next Day Air Saver, Next Day Air Early, or 2nd Day Air — overnight is not required). USPS Priority is still available FFL-to-FFL via Stamps.com. Handguns are quoted and packed on their own so the air cost doesn’t spread to the rest of the order.
• Long guns - Ground-eligible (UPS Ground or USPS Priority), quoted as their own shipment.
• Ammunition - UPS Ground only; USPS is prohibited. Ammunition is quoted as its own shipment.
• Accessories - No restrictions. They ride along on a ground shipment (with ammunition first, then long guns) so they never pay for air.

Troubleshooting

No Shipping Options at Checkout

• Check if the customer’s state is in a shipping zone
• Verify the zone is enabled
• Make sure rates exist for the zone

Wrong Rates Showing

• Check rate conditions (weight/order total)
• Verify product weights are set correctly — weight rates use each product’s weight multiplied by its quantity
• Review rate min/max values
• Confirm no real-time rate provider is overriding your manual rates
