Shipping Insurance

Offer shipping insurance to protect orders during transit with flexible pricing options.

Prerequisites

Before setting up, you need:

  • Shipping Insurance plugin activated from Settings > Plugins

Setting Up

  1. Navigate to Settings > Plugins
  2. Find Shipping Insurance
  3. Click Activate
  4. Navigate to Plugins > Shipping Insurance
  5. Configure your insurance settings (see below)

General Settings

Setting Description
Label Display name for the insurance line item (e.g., "Shipping Protection")
Required When enabled, insurance is automatically applied to all orders
Removable Allow customers to remove insurance if they choose

Pricing Methods

Choose one of three pricing methods for calculating insurance costs.

Flat Rate

A fixed dollar amount added to every order.

Setting Description
Amount Fixed insurance cost (e.g., $4.99)

Percentage

A percentage of the cart subtotal.

Setting Description
Percentage Percentage of cart value (e.g., 2%)

Tiered Pricing

Different rates based on cart value ranges. This allows you to charge more for higher-value orders.

Setting Description
Min amount Minimum cart value for the tier
Max amount Maximum cart value for the tier
Insurance amount Insurance cost for orders in this range

Tip: Create multiple tiers to cover all cart value ranges. For example: $0-$100 = $2.99, $100-$500 = $5.99, $500+ = $9.99.

Product Type Scoping

Control which products trigger the insurance option:

Option Description
All product types Insurance available for all orders
Specific types Only offer insurance when the cart contains selected product types

Display Options

Setting Description
Show in cart Display insurance option on the cart page
Show on checkout Display insurance option during checkout
Tooltip text Help text explaining what the insurance covers

How It Works

  1. Customer adds items to their cart
  2. If the cart qualifies (based on product type scoping), the insurance option appears
  3. Customer opts in (or it's auto-applied if required)
  4. Insurance amount is calculated based on the configured pricing method
  5. The insurance fee appears as a line item on the order

Troubleshooting

Insurance Not Showing

Symptoms: Insurance option doesn't appear in cart or checkout

Solutions:

  • Verify the plugin is activated
  • Check that display options are enabled (cart and/or checkout)
  • If using product type scoping, confirm the cart contains qualifying products
  • Ensure pricing is configured (at least one pricing method set up)

Incorrect Insurance Amount

Symptoms: Insurance amount doesn't match expectations

Solutions:

  • Review your pricing method configuration
  • For tiered pricing, check that tiers cover the cart's value range
  • For percentage pricing, verify the percentage value
